Cambodia signs free trade agreement with China, but all goods must meet sanitary standards

H.E Veng Sakhon, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, explained that although Cambodia has already signed a free trade agreement with China (CCFTA), all agricultural products that will be exported to China must meet the requirements of sanitary standard and food safety.

H.E Veng Sakhon's explanation came after some public commented that Cambodia had already signed a free trade agreement with the People's Republic of China (CCFTA) and why Cambodia could not export some more agricultural products to China.

According to the announcement of the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday this week, H.E Veng Sakhon said that the bilateral free trade agreement allows the liberalization of agricultural products market without tariff measures (Tariff measures) and does not mean that the two countries can export and import agricultural products without barriers, (non-tariff measures).

The Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement will allow Cambodia to import a wide range of agricultural products into the Chinese market duty-free, but those agricultural products must meet the requirements of phytosanitary standards and food safety regulated by Chinese laws and regulations, added the Minister of Agriculture.

In 2020, Cambodia exported 17 types of agricultural products to the Chinese market, with a volume of more than 736,000 tons. those products consisted of fresh bananas, rice, cassava slices, cassava flour, rubber, cashew nuts, fresh mango and coconut oil.

These products can be exported because the two countries have already signed the protocol.
