On January 11, 2022, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, and H.E. Hayashi Yoshimasa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan held telephone conversation to discuss various topics.
Through the official Facebook page, H. Prak Sokhonn, Special Envoy of ASEAN in 2022, briefed the results of the meeting.
The Cambodian Foreign Minister thanked Japan for its overwhelming support for the development of Cambodia as well as ASEAN chair this year.
The Japanese Foreign Minister noted some progress after the visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen to Myanmar and praised Cambodia's efforts to help Myanmar solve its problems.
A joint statement between Cambodia and Myanmar said that the major progress that has been made is that Myanmar's military leaders have decided to extend the ceasefire until the end of 2022 and call on all parties to end the violence, while Cambodia and Myanmar also support meeting between stakeholders to coordinate humanitarian assistance for Myanmar. In addition, Myanmar's top military leader also came out to guarantee and facilitate the visit of the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair 2022 while on duty in Myanmar to meet with all stakeholders.
The Cambodian and Japanese diplomats agreed that the full implementation of the five-point unanimous agreement is a key factor in achieving this. H.E Prak Sokhonn also committed his commitment to work closely with Dr. Yohesa Sakawa, Japan's Special Envoy for reconciliation in Myanmar issue.
