The Director of the Phnom Penh Autonomous Water Supply Authority said that Japan was studying the possibility of Phase 3 water treatment plant construction in 2027.

Mr. Long Naro, the Royal Government Delegate in charge of the Phnom Penh Autonomous Water Supply Authority, made this known during a visit of Japanese Finance Minister, H.E KATO Katsunobu to the Water Treatment Plant in the eastern outskirts of Phnom Penh on January 10, 2025.

He said that the Japanese Finance Minister wanted to review the achievements in the water sector supported by the Japanese government’s financial assistance to the Phnom Penh Autonomous Water Supply Authority and to study the possibility of providing additional assistance and loans for the construction of Phase 3 water treatment plant with the capacity to produce approximately 200,000 cubic meters of clean water per day.

He added that since 1993, the Japanese government has provided approximately 20 billion yen or US$311 million in assistance to support clean water supply projects in Cambodia.

He said that Japan’s financing assistance accounted for 27% of the total investment in the water sector, making Japan the second largest provider of assistance to the Cambodian water sector after the French Agency for Development.

The Phnom Penh Autonomous Water Supply Authority has 7 water production plants.
