H.E Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, H.E UENO Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, and Ms. Alissar Chaker, Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to Cambodia, signed a project document on “Strengthening Capacity to Handle Plastic Waste in Urban Areas” in Cambodia.
The ceremony was held on February 27, 2025 at the Ministry of Environment.
H.E Eang Sophallet said that the amount of plastic waste that is increasing is putting great pressure on the solid waste management system and the environment.
The Minister said that in order for Cambodia to be clean, from the number of plastic bags that are seen being thrown away and used a lot, in the past, the Ministry of Environment has launched a campaign to reduce the use of plastic to manage and reduce plastic waste, reuse, recycle and recover it as energy properly and effectively.
The Minister highly appreciated the projects that were jointly signed, which play an important role in contributing to cleanliness in the environmental sector cycle strategy, especially reducing the use of single-use plastics.
He recommended strengthening environmental education through the ministry’s continued campaign in schools, temples, factories, enterprises and local communities, and providing garbage bins to localities to promote proper management and segregation of plastic waste.
