H.E Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, expressed gratitude for the support and long-term vision of the Korean government and the ASEAN Secretariat in initiating this important regional cooperation initiative, which will contribute to Cambodia’s efforts to address methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

The Minister of Environment’s statement was made at the official launch of the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Project on Methane Reduction in the Kingdom of Cambodia on 6 May 2025 at the Ministry of Environment.

The ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Project will provide a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, build technical capacity, and implement practical solutions tailored to Cambodia’s national context, with the shared goal of becoming a carbon-neutral country by 2050.

The project also supports Cambodia’s efforts to implement Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to attract carbon finance and promote private sector participation, as well as ensure environmental integrity.

Cambodia has seen a significant increase in methane emissions, especially from the agriculture sector (rice cultivation and livestock farming) and the waste sector.

These sectors are not only important for the economy and livelihoods, but are also areas where implementing smart and climate-resilient measures can bring multiple benefits, such as reducing emissions, improving public health, and increasing community resilience.
