May 20 every year has been observed as the day to remember the atrocities committed by the regime of the Khmer Rouge against the Cambodian people

2025 marks the 8th anniversary of the National Day of Remembrance on May 20.  

The observation of the day has been stated in a Sub-Decree No. 19, dated February 14, 2018 issued by the Royal Government of Cambodiato commemorate the victims of the crimes committed during the Democratic Kampuchea regime between April 17, 1975 and January 6, 1979.

The National Day of Remembrance was also established to honor the memory of the victims who died during the Democratic Kampuchea regime, and to restore the honor and dignity of the victims, whether alive or dead. It also means to contribute to national reconciliation and harmony in Cambodian society and to promote the dissemination and understanding of the atrocities committed during the Democratic Kampuchea regime so that they do not happen again, said Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet in his letter.

This National Day of Remembrance” was recognized by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia as one of 26 reparations projects officially and permanently recognized for the suffering of civil parties and to promote the memory of the crimes committed during the Democratic Kampuchea regime.
