Cambodian Prime Minister hopes European Union will continue to be Cambodia’s partner after graduation from least development country status in 2029

The Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed his strong hope that the European Union would continue to be Cambodia’s partner after graduation from least development country status in 2029.

The Cambodian Prime Minister’s remarks were made during a bilateral meeting with European Council President, H.E António Costa on the sidelines of the 3rd United Nations Conference on Oceans, from June 8th to 13th, 2025 in Nice, France.

The European Council President highlighted the good relations between the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the ongoing cooperation with member countries, including Cambodia. He also highly valued Cambodia’s efforts in building a legal framework, especially the recent progress on the fisheries law.

The European Council President expressed his strong interest in further expanding relations and cooperation with Cambodia.

The President of the European Council lauded Cambodia’s stance in the Ukraine war and stressed that if war breaks out, we do not know when it will end.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei Prime Minister thanked the European Union for its contribution to Cambodia’s socio-economic development through the implementation of joint projects between Cambodia and the European Union.The Cambodian Prime Minister strongly hopes that the European Union would continue to be a partner with Cambodia after graduation from the least developed country status group in 2029.
