Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge on the Mekong River of Kratie, to be temporarily operated for traffic during Pchum Ben Festival

The Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge on the Mekong River in the province of Kratie, is scheduled to be temporarily operated during Pchum Ben Festivals in September this year.

H.E Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, on Monday, July 7, 2025, presided over a ceremony to celebrate the final concrete connection of the bridge. The bridge will be open to traffic for motorcycles and light vehicles on the occasion of the annual Alms-Laying and Pchum Ben Festivals in September 2025.

The bridge across the Mekong River in Kratie Province has been officially named “Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge” by the Head of the Royal Governmen. It is located in Talus Village, Boslao Commune, Chet Borei District, Kratie Province, with a total length of over 1, 000 meters and a width of more than 13 meters.

The bridge and connecting road construction project was funded by a concessional loan from the Government of the People’s Republic of China of about US$114 million and was constructed by Shanghai Construction Group. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 2, 2023 under the chairmanship of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister and now President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

As of the end of June 2025, the construction of the bridge body has reached 96% progress, while the overall project, including the connecting road, has reached 70% progress and is expected to be completed in September 2026.

The Deputy Prime Minister spoke of the benefits and advantages of the Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge project and the connecting road, which will contribute to making Cambodia’s internal transport system more integrated, especially promoting transport growth in the agricultural, agro-industrial and tourism sectors in the provinces in the northeastern part of the country.
