The National Assembly Standing Committee has approved a proposal to amend the law to revoke citizenship of Cambodian citizens who collude with foreigners to undermine the national interests.
The approval was made in a meeting on Monday July 7 , 2025 after the National Assembly reviewed the proposal of 125 signatories who requested the amendment to Article 33 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia to pave the way for the preparation of a legal framework to revoke Cambodian citizenship from citizens who betray the nation, betray their own citizens, and act seriously to harm the interests of the Kingdom of Cambodia and Cambodian citizens by colluding with foreigners.
The Standing Committee of the National Assembly held a meeting to review the results of the expert committee’s study on Tuesday July 8, and the proposal to amend Article 33 of the Cambodian Constitution by the 125 signatory representatives will be submitted to the 4th plenary session of the 7th National Assembly for discussion and approval on the morning of July 11.
The amendment to Article 33 of the Cambodian Constitution is to ensure the protection and promotion of the interests of the nation and its people, and to prevent and oppose all acts of treason by any person who conspires with foreign countries to destroy the nation and its own citizens.
According to the new Article 49 of the Cambodian Constitution, which is the supreme law of the nation, all Cambodian citizens must uphold the national interest above all else and must not take any action, whether directly or indirectly, that harms the interests and citizens of Cambodia.
