Cambodian Prime Minister: Irrigation Development Project in Banteay Meanchey Province Will Reduce Natural Disasters

The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, said that the Banteay Meanchey irrigation and flood reduction development Project will help reduce the natural disasters of flash floods in the region and cross-border floods from Thailand. 

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet made the point on his official telegram last Saturday. 

The Cambodian Prime Minister added that the irrigation and flood reduction development Project in Banteay Meanchey province receives water from streams along the Cambodian-Thai border, which requires the construction of major infrastructure such as irrigation canals and large-scale drainage of 6 lines with a total length of 92.65 km in anticipation of flooding in the area.

The project is capable of irrigating a total of nearly 20,000 hectares of rain-fed land and 3,500 hectares of dry season, and more than 42, 000 families in 17 communes of Poipet City, Malai district, Ochrov district and Serei Sophorn city have benefitted from the project, stressed the Cambodian Prime Minister.

The purpose of this project is to increase agricultural productivity, reduce the impact of natural disasters and increase the efficiency of water resources to ensure adequate water supply for the production of rice and all kinds of crops and for daily use, It also helps reduce the risk of floods and droughts, which will be an important part to improve the lives of the people and promote economic growth in accordance with the first - phased pentagonal strategy of the Royal Government  of the seventh mandate, led by Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
