Cambodian Prime Minister: Cambodia remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under the "Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Transport, Stockpiling and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines"

The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, said that Cambodia has remained committed to fulfilling its obligations under the "Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Transportation, Stockpiling and Transfer of anti-personnel mines. 

The remarks were made when Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet delivered a special address at the high-level opening of the 80th session of the Commission in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet called for joint efforts to eliminate this dangerous weapon, as well as to support and participate in the historic event. Cambodia remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under the convention on the prohibition of the Use, transport, stockpiling and transfer of anti-Personnel mines, known as the Ottawa Convention, 

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet added that as chair of this year's Ottawa Convention, Cambodia would co-chair and host the 5th review meeting entitled "Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World from November 25th to 29, 2024. 

The Cambodian Prime Minister stressed that landmines and unexploded ordnance left over from the war have remained an obstacle to overall development, and have resulted in the widening of the digital gap and poor access to quality internet services. Recognizing the need to address the problems, mine action has been incorporated into Cambodia's 18th sustainable development goal.Samdech Thipadei Prime Minister also thanked UN-ESCAP for assisting Cambodia in formulating a national mine action policy. 

The Cambodian Prime Minister said that by so doing, UN-ESCAP has participated in mine action for the first time.
