Cambodian Prime Minister Inspects the Progress of the Construction Site of Techo International Airport in Kandal Steung District

The Prime Minister on Tuesday March 12, made an inspection tour of the new international airport under construction on the southern part of Phnom Penh.

Samdech Moha Bovor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, inspected the progress of the construction of Techo International Airport and to meet officers and workers on the construction site in Prek Sleng Commune, Kandal Steung District, Kandal Province.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister of Cambodia, decided to build the Techo International Airport on an area of about 2,600 hectares, which partly lie in Kandal Steung districts, Kandal province and partly in Bati district, Takeo province. The new international airport project costs about US$ 1.5 billion.

The construction of Techo International Airport was announced during Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Cambodia in January 2018. Samdech Techo Hun Sen and H.E Li Keqiang's also presided over the signing ceremony of the investment project between the overseas investment Corporation of Cambodia and the China Consruction Yangtze River (Malaysia).

The new international airport project is the fruit of close cooperation between Cambodia and China under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. According to sources from Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, after completion, the new Phnom Penh airport is expected to be one of the biggest in Southeast Asia. The airport will be capable of accommodating 13 million passengers a year in the short-to-medium term, added the same sources.
