Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, said that ASEAN has been not just a regional player, but now has become a global facilitator and in the future, ASEAN would be able to change its role from reacting to the world to the one that could help organize the world order.
The remarks were made when Samdech TechoHun Sen made a lecture on ASEAN issues at the ASEAN Secretariat on May 5, 2025.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that the struggle for power has pushed some major powers to deviate from the rules of global governance that they worked hard to establish after World War II, which has been shaking the international order, especially the multilateral mechanism based on rules.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen also said that global mechanisms have been losing influence, both the United Nations General Assembly and the role of the United Nations Security Council, especially the role of the World Trade Organization, which has almost been gone.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen added that all have been strengthening themselves by strengthening institutional efficiency and promoting deeper integration, preparing the ASEAN Vision 2045, which will be adopted at the upcoming summit in May, which is a step in the right direction.
The ASEAN Vision, which has a strategic plan on the three pillars of strengthening connectivity, sees ASEAN developing rapidly as a center of growth in the Indo-Pacific region, stressed Samdech Techo Hun Sen.
