Samdech Techo Hun Sen Asks ASEAN Leaders to Accelerate Decision to Accept Timor-Leste as New Member of ASEAN

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen asked the top leaders of ASEAN member countries to speed up the decision to accept Timor-Leste as a new member of ASEAN, noting that the country has made great efforts to meet the conditions in line with this Southeast Asian organization.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen's request was made at the 38th and 39th ASEAN Summit via video conference on October 26, 2021.

In addition to the key issues on the Covid-19 pandemic and the recovery of ASEAN countries after the Covid-19 crisis, the topic of Timor-Leste's application for ASEAN membership was also discussed.

Timor-Leste has been known to seek ASEAN membership for many years, but has not yet achieved results due to disagreements from some ASEAN member states.

Cambodia has made great efforts to help Timor-Leste become a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said he saw Timor-Leste work hard to meet ASEAN requirements, but some ASEAN member states ignored Timor-Leste's efforts.

Samdech Techo also expressed concern over the isolation of Timor-Leste in the event of geopolitical competition in Southeast Asia.
