The Cambodian Minister of Interior called on authorities at all levels to be well prepared to ensure safety, security and social order during the coming traditional Khmer new year celebration.

His Excellency Sar Sokha, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, issued an instruction on Tuesday April 2 to all municipal and provincial administrations to do their utmost to ensure that people across the country would be able to joyfully observe the festival.

The Minister stressed that measures have to be ready to prevent any mishaps during the celebration.

The Minister of Interior added that the mission of all authorities would contribute to the preservation of national traditions and customs.

The traditional Khmer new year is celebrated in mid-April every year. The festival usually takes place for three days and this year, it begins on April 13 until 16. During the celebration, people of all walks of life, public servants and factory and enterprise workers, who are given a holiday leave, will return to their native land to join their families to celebrate the event. Buddhist believers will go to pagodas in the morning to offer food to the monks, who in turn will pray for the souls of the deceased members of the family. People will gather in the evening to eat and drink during the celebration.
