Japan provides about US$ 58 million in loan to Cambodia for Siem Reap water expansion project

H.E. Aun Porn Moniroth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, and Ms. KAMEI Haruko, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Cambodia, last Thursday signed via Video Conference a Concessional Loan Agreement for Siem Reap Water Supply Expansion Project worth about US$58 million.

According to a joint press release of the Ministry of Economy and JICA on October 21, the project aims to build a water treatment plant with a capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day, using water from the Tonle Sap lake.

The Project also includes the construction of a network - pumping station, construction of water distribution system and construction of water treatment plants.

The project will play an important role in the supply and distribution of clean water to the people throughout Siem Reap.

The signing of the concession loan agreement is another legal document following the exchange of letters signed on October 11, 2021 between the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia.

The achievements of this project will contribute significantly to help the Royal Government of Cambodia to achieve the "National Strategic Development Plan" on the water supply sector by supporting the Siem Reap Water Supply Authority, which clearly responds to the needs of the locals.

It is Cambodia's priority to expand the water supply system in line with the first angle of the fourth rectangle, as stated in the fourth phase of the Royal Government of Cambodia's Rectangular Strategy Document.
