Samdech Hun Manet: The Funan-Techo Canal will serve the water transport sector from river to sea, create jobs and help lower transportation costs

The Prime Minister of Cambodia stated that the Funan-Techo canal would be part of the river-to-sea waterway transport in Cambodia.

Addressing at a meeting with Cambodians overseas living in Australia and New Zealand on Sunday March 3, 2024, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said that the planned project would help create more jobs and lower transport and travel costs for local residents. The Prime Minister further said that a recent study showed that the project would provide many benefits like reducing the duration, distance and cost of current transport and travel, creating commercial areas and logistics centers,  and several new satellite ports,  expanding the development of agriculture, irrigation, aquaculture and animal husbandry, supporting the development of Cambodia's Fourth Economic Pole, generating more jobs at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Phnom Penh Autonomous Port and other ports, promoting urban and urban development and real estate growth. The Tonle Bassac Navigation and Logistics System Project was named " Funan Techo Canal project at the 6th plenary Session of the National Assembly on May 19, 2023. The Royal Government has decided to set up an inter-ministerial commission to implement this project.

The 180-kilometer Funan Techo Canal project extending from the provinces of Kandal to Kep through four provinces, Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep. 

The project will build three navigation dams, 11 bridges and a 208-kilometer sidewalk, and provide navigation assistance and other cross-river infrastructure. The construction of the new waterway project is estimated to cost US$ 1.7 billion and take about four years to complete.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and his spouse have been in Melbourne, Australia from March 1 to 5 for a special summit to celebrate the 50 years of cooperation between Australia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
