The first Vice Chairman of the Mine Action of Cambodia wished that the Kingdom of Tonga joined the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of the Use of Anti-Personnel Mines

Senior Minister Ly Thuch, First Vice-Chairman of the Mine Authority and Chairman of the 2024 Ottawa Convention, asked her excellency Fekitamoeloa Katoa 'Utoikamanu, Minister of Meteorology, Energy, Information on Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Relations of the Kingdom of Tonga, to consider joining the Convention when the two sides met in Bangkok on Tuesday April 23.

The Cambodian Senior Minister also invited Tonga to the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World to be hosted by Cambodia from November, 25 to 29, 2024.

The Kingdom of Tonga is one of three island nations in the Pacific that have not yet become a party to the Ottawa Convention. The other two nations are the Marshall Islands and Micronesia.

As the Chair of the 2024 Ottawa Convention and on behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia, H.E Ly Thuch wished that Tonga considered    becoming a State Party to the Ottawa Convention.

In response, the Minister of Tonga said that she would take Cambodia's request to the Government of Tonga to consider joining as the party to the 2024 Ottawa Convention.
