Norwegian Civil Society Organizations in Cambodia Build Capacity in Mine Action Projects in Cambodia

A memorandum of understanding on mine action projects was reached between the Cambodian Mine Action Authority and the Norwegian People's Aid Organization in Cambodia.

The memorandum was signed by His Excellency Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Deputy Chairman of the Cambodia Mine Action Authority, and Mr. Hans Peter RISSER, Country Director of Norwegian People’s Aid Cambodia, on March 25, 2025.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding, H.E. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Deputy Chairman of the Cambodia Mine Action Authority, appreciated the significant contribution of Norwegian People’s Aid Cambodia and Norway to mine action in Cambodia since 1992. The Senior Minister said that the Organization has actively been involved in mine clearance, technical assistance, human resource training.
He further said that thanks to the collaboration between the Mine Action Authority and the Norwegian Civil Society Organization in Cambodia, about 25 million square meters of land has been cleared of mines and turned into land for housing, schools, agriculture, and other developments, which have contributed significantly to socio-economic development and poverty reduction. The Senior Minister stressed that the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding has demonstrated the commitment to continuing the strong and long-term partnership between the two institutions and between Cambodia and Norway. Through this memorandum, Norwegian Civil Society Organizations in Cambodia will support the Mine Action Authority in training human resources in key skills such as quality management, information systems management, gender mainstreaming and effective operations, which will contribute to ensuring the sustainability of mine action to achieve Cambodia’s long-term vision. The Senior Minister added that mine action has not been just about clearing land from mines, but about changing the lives of families and entire communities, and in particular, it has been about healing the scars left by the past wars.
