The Ministry of Environment has been looking at ways of helping local people to make money to increase their incomes

His Excellency Chuob Paris, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment, has recently told local journalists that the Ministry would considers the organization of recreations in the protected areas for the people in the community to make money from collecting service and entrance fees from visitors. The senior official further said that the measure was also part of the environmental strategy, which not only increases Cambodia's forest cover by 60% by 2050, but also contributes to improving the lives of communities.

Mr. Phan Thon, head of Prey Thom Anlong Thom Protected Area Community on the ridge of Kulen Mountain in Svay Leu District, Siem Reap Province, said that organizing a tourism community has helped increase the income of the community through selling community products, food and providing transportation services. 

The potential of the first Prey Thom community is the waterfront for national or international visitors to camp and tour around the community forest. There are ancient hills, ancient temples and landscapes, " he said.

According to Mr. Sun Kong, Director of the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Environment, there are eight protected areas in Siem Reap province and they all under the supervision of the state, which has to prevent private encroachment and to promote conservation and management of forests and animals for eco-tourism and sustainable green landscapes. These protected areas cover a total area of 280,000 hectares.
