The King of Cambodia urges AIPA members to continue to safeguard peace as some countries in the region and around the world are facing crises, wars and global issues.
In a message welcoming the opening of the 43rd ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) on November 21, 2022 at Sokha Hotel, Phnom Penh, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, King of the Kingdom of Cambodia, said: Rising tensions between superpowers and new threats to the use of nuclear weapons are a big concern over the fate of mankind as a whole.
His Majesty the King urges all stakeholders, especially AIPA member countries, to continue to protect and maintain peace that has been achieved for a long time. It must also continue to put in place daily measures to address climate change crises and disasters that have affected the food security and livelihoods of people in the region, stressed the King.
His Majesty the King added that ASEAN has important principles in place to resolve them based on the UN Charter, and the ASEAN Central Committee will play an important role in strengthening international order on the basis of the rule of law for the great benefits for people, both regionally and globally. His Majesty the King hoped that the gathering at the 43rd IPA General Assembly would truly reflect the spirit of unity and determination to overcome the current challenges and achieve a peaceful and prosperous future for the region.
At the same time, to achieve this future, we must ensure that development efforts at both the national and regional levels are closely aligned with the concept of “Sustainability Environment and Resilience” that reflected in the theme of the AIPA, the Cambodian monarch said, stressing: "We believe that our diplomatic relations, partnerships and inter-parliamentary cooperation are very important and that we must continue to promote them in line with the efforts of the respective governments," to provide the motivation for our efforts towards achieving lasting peace and prosperity for the entire ASEAN Community in the near future.
